Deborah Murrell has been project manager for Cumbria and Lancashire Education Online (CLEO), one of the ten English Regional Broadband Consortia, since 2004 Cumbria and Lancashire Education Online (CLEO) is one of 10 English Regional Broadband Consortia (RBCs) and is made up of Cumbria County Council and Lancashire County Council. Originally formed in 1998 the CLEO broadband network provides high quality private broadband network for all schools across Cumbria & Lancashire. CLEO also provides a range of additional services supporting the use of broadband technology in the classroom and to support pupils learning at home and for teachers in their work. The CLEO network is designed, managed and maintained by Lancaster University Network Services in close collaboration with the Local Authorities.
CLEO began trials of the opensource virtual learning environment Moodle early in 2006 and now offers a fully hosted and managed Moodle as an option for all schools with a CLEO broadband connection. This managed service is hosted in the CLEO server farms at Lancaster University. Moodle has proved popular with teachers across the two counties. CLEO provides additional development and training to support teachers and schools in their adoption of virtual learning environments.
